Surfing is a sport completely dependent on nature.

Berselancar-Indonesian for ‘surf’

Little bit gutted we weren’t able to experiment more with these but this is what we were able to churn out with the facilities available and limited access. Huge thanks to Garth for letting us use his computer- sorry we made it have so many hissy fits!

Designed for the most epic surf trip through the islands of the Pacific. Inspired in particular by the charters through The Mentawais in Indonesia.

Materials and Manufacture:

-The outer shell of the boat is made from plasma cut aluminium sheets as our boat form is not too organic, these are then press formed and powder coated to generate the off white cream colour. We chose to plasma cut the aluminium pieces as water jet cutting would oxidize the edge.

-The seats and couch covers are stuffed and made from leather but also have a PVC covering to make them resistant to water.

-The bimini and surf rack fabric are made from hard wearing canvas.

-The cupboard doors and table are made from Pinus radiata wood which is sealed with a Polyurethane gel-wood stain making them suitable for interior and exterior use.

-Kitchen flooring is marine grade carpet.

-Outside flooring is a decking timber.

-Rails and poles are made from stainless steel tubing.


  • The overall layout of the boat was constructed in a open plan fashion due to the tropical weather its was designed for. This creates a free flowing atmosphere between the boat and it’s surroundings.
  • Bimini located on the top level, to be used when weather is undesirable. It may also be folded back into arch when not in use.

  • Hand rail follows ‘outer’ walkway so you can access the different sections of the boat with ease.
  • Sections include:

-At the stern, toilet, vanity and outside shower.

-In middle, ladder to access to deck, kitchen and eating area and then relaxing/sleeping area.

-At the bow, ‘on top’ is a  free area to relax in sun, watch waves. ‘Underneath’ is a area for sleeping and storing gear.

  • Anchor is located on the front left hand side of the bow. The anchor lock is accessed from the walkway at front of boat.
  • Our water tank and waste tanks are located under the front sleeping area.

  • Navigation lights
  • Upstairs includes a seat behind the console area for fishing.

  • Below illustrates concept of ‘bunk bed’ couches. Allowing four people to sleep in the mid section.
  • Canvas has a elastic weave integrated into it to allow the surfboard to hang from them. They provide an extra layer of shade- but are protected from the canvas so they will not yellow.

  • In the ‘kitchen/eating area underneath the seats is space for storing snorkeling gear, life jackets and games!

Kitchen includes: Microwave, oven, sink, cabinets, stove top elements and chopping block.

  • The motor may be accessed from inside the kitchen- see rhino file for contracting door.

  • Console with adjustable seat for driver.
  • Top deck is accessed via the wooden ladder in kitchen.the trap door can be left open or closed.

We came across many problems when attempting to render our boat.

When first importing our boat onto Bunkspeed Shot it wouldn’t load as it said there was not enough memory.

In order to fix this problem we tried importing the file in parts however they didn’t match up. We tried importing all the files with a hull so that they would line up however that meant that there where numerous hulls that could not be deleted as if they where the whole file that came with it would go to.

Next we tried exporting with origin having a point in the middle to always snap to however this did not work either…..

so we pondered……

the next logical step seemed to be to try and download a rendering programme onto either of our computers however the problem there was that we both own macs and many of the rendering programmes are for pcs.

Holly attempted downloading keyshot onto her mac laptop and after recieving the code for a trial found that when rendering it left numerous ‘keyshot” water marks on the render….

no good…..

next step…..find someone with a computer who is willing to help us!

…..and this is when we got in contact with Garth from 4th year last year. He owns a pc computer with Vray and was willing to let us use the software!

After setting up the file we did a few test renders (looking good!). The first render took about 4 hours….this meant we needed to turn the settings down.

We did this and a render was left for 2 and a half hours only to find the comp to crash right at the end!

The one problem with rendering at Garth’s house is that we can only be there certain times, restricting our ability to really fine tune!

The computer is currently rendering for us now so fingers crossed it will all work out…

very much a mission…but at least its taught us when facing a problem keep searching for the solution and something will work out in the end!
